As soon as you get your flowers home, trim 1–2 cm off the stems at a 45-degree angle using a sharp knife or scissors. This helps the stems absorb water more efficiently and prevents them from sitting flat on the bottom of the vase.
Leaves submerged in water can rot and create bacteria, shortening the life of your flowers. Strip off any leaves that will sit below the waterline before arranging.
Bacteria is the enemy of fresh flowers. Always start with a thoroughly cleaned vase to keep the water—and your blooms—fresh.
Change the water every 2–3 days and add fresh flower food if available. If you’re out of flower food, a small splash of lemon juice, sugar, and bleach (yes, just a drop) can help mimic its effects.
Display your flowers in a cool area away from direct sunlight, heating vents, or drafts. Heat speeds up blooming and wilting.
Every few days, re-trim the stems to help water flow freely and remove any faded blooms to encourage the rest to stay fresh.
